Mats

Important facts about mats.

Mats are a serious problem and are extremely harmful to your dog. Through no fault of your own, you may be unaware of how serious this can be. When mats become very close to the skin, it may cut off the blood circulation to that particular area. Serious mats are extremely painful to your dog. If your dog’s coat is not regularly groomed, infection could also set in and the skin may become torn. In seriously matted dogs, every movement will create pain.
Should your pet snap when being touched, or start dragging and scratching itself, mats could be the reason why. The places most mats occur are underneath the armpits, chest, the rear end, behind the ears and around the tail.
We love our dogs and their happiness is of the utmost importance. Grooming is an essential part of their welfare.
Nearly all breeds and cross breeds of dogs suffer with mats at some stage in their life regardless of how clean your dogs coat is or how often they are combed or brushed. Its all about the right tools and frequency and in today’s busy lifestyles, owners don’t always have the time to keep on top of the problem.
The British Dog Groomers Association recognises the following breeds/cross breeds who are at high risk of matting and may need additional attention when grooming.
  • Bichon Frise, Cavaliers, Cockers, Collies, Huskys, Lhasa Apso, Malamute, Malteses, Poodle, Retriever, schnauzers, setters, shih Tzu, Shepherds, Spaniels, Terriers, Airedales, Westies, Yorkies.
Whilst we try not to charge more than the set price, if a dog requires de matting, we may have to charge an additional fee for the extra time that has incurred.
When grooming your dog, if it is too painful or distressing to brush out the mats then we will cut or clip them out so we do not cause the dog any undue stress
If you are struggling to keep on top of your daily brushing then bring them in for a quick brush between grooms. Keeping on top of the brushing will limit the cost of a full groom, prevent any risk of having to have the coat clipped off and prevent sores which could result in vets fees….more importantly, it keeps your four legged friend comfy!.
